How to Make Long Distance Relationships Work

Ideally, a long distance relationship is not planned that way from the get go.  But sometimes life throws curve balls our way and we have to try and make the best of it.  So when you're totally into that guy or girl you've been seeing for a while now and they've been transferred to another city or country, don't fret because there are plenty of things you can do to make it work.

• The most important of all is not what you do but what you shouldn't do.  Don't be suspicious of what your boyfriend or girlfriend is doing when you guys are separated by long distance.  You need to be trusting because that is the thread that will keep your relationship connected. 


• Find a good phone plan.  Let's face it.  Most of your quality time together will be forced to be over the phone.  I guarantee you'll spend hours on the phone with your loved one just like the good old days in junior high school. 


• It's better to plan multiple shorter trips to see each other rather than a long one.  There are a couple of reasons for this.  First, it's likely that the more time you spend together physically, the more you'll get attached.  In other words, as time goes on instead of visiting you'll start to feel like you are living with that person.  And when it finally comes time to get back home and say goodbye, it can be really painful. The other advantage to planning more trips that are shorter in length is that instead of saying goodbye, you can just turn it into a see you later (the next time you are going to visit).  So that way you can go from being together to anxiously waiting for the next time you'll be together.


• Keep communicating.  I don't just mean talking here.  Make sure you share what's going on in your life so that your boyfriend or girlfriend understands what's going on inside you.  This will ensure that you don't both head off in different directions emotionally and help the effort to grown together.


• Have supportive friends.  There is nothing worse for a long distance relationship than a friend who doesn't understand or worse, who doesn't care.  You don't need people giving you reasons why your long distance relationship won't work.  It's hard enough as it is and you should focus on the positive and have people around you that do the same.
